The
Game Of Omaha Poker
|
|
|
|
When most
people think of poker, they
generally think of Texas holdem
poker. Yet the game of poker
consists of many other variations,
one of which is known as Omaha
poker. Omaha is very similar to
Texas holdem poker except Omaha is
played with four cards instead of
two. The addition of two extra cards
makes this version of poker more
interesting and challenging.
Differences To Texas
Holdem Poker
The principle of Omaha is very
similar to Texas holdem poker.
Players are each given four cards to
play with during a hand of Omaha.
Although players get given four
cards, they may only use two of
these cards to form a winning hand.
The other three cards must be chosen
from the five community cards
available to all players. Everything
else is virtually identical to Texas
holdem poker e.g. five community
cards, three rounds of betting, and
the same betting options.
In comparison to Texas holdem poker,
Omaha is generally a more action
packed game with more players. Since
players get to use four cards
instead of two, a lot more players
will get involved in pots because
they have a better chance of hitting
a card combination. The advantage of
more action and more players is that
pots are generally larger in Omaha
poker, and you get to play a lot
more hands as well.
While Texas holdem is a pretty
straight forward game, Omaha offers
a lot more options and is slightly
more complicated. For example, when
a player is given two cards to play
in Texas holdem poker, their options
are very limited. Their play is
entirely based on those two cards
without many other options. In a
typical pot playing Omaha however, a
players best two cards and options
generally change multiple times
during a pot. Often players start a
pot with a pair of high cards, such
as aces for example. As play
progresses and more community cards
come out, a players best hand might
change from aces to a flush, or a
straight. Since a player has four
cards, their best cards generally
change as more cards come out.
Omaha poker is a fun alternative to
the game of Texas holdem poker. The
addition of two extra cards might
seem like a small change, but this
difference completely changes the
game. The result is a more action
packed game with many more players,
and generally larger pots. Omaha
poker is a great game for players
who enjoy playing more pots, and for
players with a strong eye for
strategical thinking.
