There can
be little doubt that there is an
element of mystique and romance
about casinos, and few will contest
that the image of casinos involves
elements of passion, energy, desire,
excitement, and even greed as well.
These make for elements that can add
much to a well-written story. It
should come as no surprise, there
have been many movies that make use
of the imagery and mystique of
casinos. Some movies make use of a
casino for its elegant setting, as a
backdrop to define the film and its
characters. In other movies, much of
the action revolves around the
setting of a casino, while in some
others, casinos are simply seen in
the background to help create the
setting. Even when a casino is
little more than a background, it is
an identifiable part of the film, a
place that is often unmistakable for
its lights, energy, elegance and
opulence. While there have been many
movies of many different genres to
make use of casinos in one form or
another, there are a number that
stand out for their excellence. Here
are some of the more famous movies
that made use of casinos. Casino
Royale (2006) The 2006
Bond film Casino Royale, not to be
confused with the 1967 film of the
same name, stars Daniel Craig as
James Bond. In Casino Royale, James
Bond goes against terrorist financer
Le Chiffre. While not all of the
action features the famed Le Casino
Royale, the movie features a
high-stakes Texas hold'em tournament
in the Montenegro-based casino,
which is one of the high points of
the film. Ocean's Eleven
(1960 and 2001) Both the
original 1960's film and the 2001
remake feature several characters as
they rip off several Las Vegas
casinos. The original featured Peter
Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin,
Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop,
while the remake stars Bernie Mac,
George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad
Pitt, Andy Garcia and Julia Roberts.
In the original, the target casinos
are the Sahara, Desert Inn, Riviera,
Sands and The Flamingo, while the
remake features the Bellagio, the
MGM Grand casinos, and The Mirage. Casino
(1995) This 1995 film by
Martin Scorsese is a fictional
account of the corruption in a Las
Vegas casino. The film stars Robert
De Niro as Sam "Ace" Rothstein, who
runs the Tangiers Casino for the
mob, Joe Pesci as Nicholas "Nicky"
Santoro, a Mafia underboss and Ace's
best friend, and Sharon Stone as
Ginger McKenna, an ex-prostitute and
Ace's wife. The story is based
around events that actually happened
in the history of the Stardust
Casino, though actual filming was
mostly done at Las Vegas' Riviera
Hotel and Casino. The
Hangover (2009) A comedy
film about how badly a Las Vegas
bachelor party can go wrong, The
Hangover stars Bradley Cooper, Ed
Helms, Justin Bartha, Zach
Galifianakis, Heather Graham, and
Jeffrey Tambor. The bachelor party
and many of the subsequent events
takes place in Caesars Palace,
though much of the movie is shot in
Las Vegas, showing a number of other
casinos in the background as well.
